Freedom Paddle Supports Entrepreneur Resilience

Helplink sponsors micro-entrepreneurs to compete in the Prescient Freedom Paddle, linking Freedom Day with resilience, skills development and inclusive economic participation through AI-enabled entrepreneurship support.

Helplink, an AI-powered platform supporting South Africa’s informal economy, is sponsoring four entrepreneurs from challenging backgrounds to compete in the Prescient Freedom Paddle around Robben Island on 27 April 2026, aligning the endurance event with Freedom Day and its powerful message of resilience.

The 27 km ocean race, held in Table Bay, circles Robben Island — a historic symbol of perseverance and leadership associated with Nelson Mandela. By connecting entrepreneurship with endurance sport, Helplink highlights the mindset required to overcome adversity and build sustainable economic opportunity.

The initiative reflects how resilience, discipline and determination are essential not only in sport, but also in building businesses within challenging environments. Helplink’s sponsorship demonstrates how CSI, ESG and social innovation initiatives can support economic inclusion by equipping entrepreneurs with tools to grow sustainable livelihoods.

Project Director Adelaide McKelvey explained that the partnership intentionally links the qualities required in endurance sport with those needed to build enterprises.

“Grit and growth go hand in hand — whether you’re navigating the ocean or building a business. This race brings that reality closer to everyday South Africans, where the challenge may look different, but the mindset required is exactly the same.”

The Helplink-sponsored paddlers include Phola Myende, Sibusiso Pheneas (Sosi) Zulu, Sandile Menjenjalo and Andile Mezula, each representing determination and perseverance in the face of challenging circumstances.

Helplink combines AI-enabled training, mentorship and structured skills development to support micro-entrepreneurs transitioning into more sustainable economic opportunities. By strengthening capabilities and confidence, the platform contributes to greater participation in formal economic systems.

Participant Sibusiso Pheneas (Sosi) Zulu emphasised the impact of the programme on his entrepreneurial journey.

“Helplink has played such a vital role in my journey. Their support has been incredible, the AI training, structured mentorship and ongoing guidance have given me the tools and confidence to keep pushing forward every day. Whether I’m training for this paddle or growing my business, Helplink has helped me adapt, stay resilient and believe that I can turn challenges into real opportunities.”

The initiative illustrates how social capital and mentorship can unlock pathways into economic participation. By supporting micro-enterprises, programmes such as Helplink contribute to broader inclusive growth outcomes aligned with sustainable development priorities.

Linking Freedom Day to entrepreneurship also reinforces the importance of economic empowerment in strengthening long-term resilience across communities.

Helplink is inviting corporate partners, funders and ecosystem stakeholders committed to enterprise development to participate in strengthening South Africa’s micro-enterprise sector.

Through collaboration, skills development and access to opportunity, initiatives such as this demonstrate how shared value can be created when resilience is supported with the right tools and partnerships.
