Citadel Funds Education Sustainability Initiative

Citadel raises R2.5 million supporting early childhood education sustainability, demonstrating how philanthropy, shared value and long-term investment strengthen social capital and opportunity for future generations.

Citadel has raised R2.5 million to support the long-term sustainability of Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School, reinforcing the role of strategic philanthropy in strengthening education outcomes and expanding opportunity for children from underserved communities.

The funds will be managed by Citadel through an endowment structure for the Gary and Vivienne Player Foundation, ensuring the continued stability of the school and its ability to support learners for years to come.

Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School, founded in 1990 by legendary golfer Gary Player and his late wife Vivienne, provides early childhood education and holistic development to 125 children from nearby informal communities in Lanseria.

Citadel CEO Andrew Möller highlighted the importance of long-term investment in education as a catalyst for inclusive growth and sustainable societal development.

Investment in early childhood development plays a critical role in strengthening long-term educational outcomes, improving social mobility and expanding economic participation. Structured philanthropic initiatives such as this contribute to building social capital and strengthening community resilience.

Since 2018, Citadel has partnered with the Gary and Vivienne Player Foundation to secure the future of the school through an endowment model designed to provide sustained funding beyond short-term donation cycles.

Over the past eight years, the partnership has raised R13.9 million to support the school’s long-term sustainability, reflecting how shared value initiatives can deliver measurable impact across education ecosystems.

The annual fundraising initiative, A Citadel Experience, combines sport, philanthropy and stakeholder engagement to mobilise support for education development. This year’s event included a golf tournament hosted by Gary Player at the Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, followed by a gala dinner and charity auction.

The event brought together business leaders, sporting figures and supporters committed to strengthening education opportunities in South Africa. Entertainment included performances from Boyzlife, featuring Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy, as well as the internationally recognised Ndlovu Youth Choir.

Gary Player emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in supporting future generations.

“We need more Ubuntu and love right now. The Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School has changed the lives of generations of children and our hope is that the sustainable funding we secured with Citadel will ensure that it continues to impact lives for generations to come.”

For many children attending the school, access to early education provides a critical foundation for future learning success. In some cases, meals provided at the school form an essential part of daily nutrition, reinforcing the role of education institutions as centres of holistic support.

Principal Kate Medupe explained that early childhood preparation contributes significantly to long-term academic success.

“Children from Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School adapt more easily to structured learning and formal classroom settings, giving them a clear advantage as they move into Grade 1.”

Citadel Head of Philanthropy Jean de Villiers highlighted the importance of structured giving models that enable measurable impact over time.

Since 2013, the Citadel Philanthropy Foundation has raised more than R68 million to support charitable initiatives focused on education and social development.

From a CSI and ESG perspective, endowment-based funding structures provide a sustainable approach to philanthropy, enabling organisations to support long-term development outcomes rather than short-term interventions.

The initiative demonstrates how collaboration between philanthropy, business and community stakeholders can strengthen education systems while expanding opportunity for future generations.
