FNB has expanded its popular 99c bread benefit to Boxer stores nationwide, helping more South Africans reduce everyday grocery costs through practical savings on a household staple.
From 1 July 2026, FNB Easy, Aspire and Prime Life customers who shop at Boxer and pay with their FNB cards will qualify to purchase up to four loaves of bread per month for just 99 cents each from the following week.
The expansion significantly increases access to one of the country’s most successful everyday savings initiatives, particularly for customers living in rural and semi-rural communities served by Boxer’s extensive national footprint.
With food prices continuing to place pressure on household budgets, FNB says the initiative focuses on providing practical financial relief where families need it most.
“The financial pressure that many households face is often felt most at the grocery till, which is why the most meaningful solutions are those that provide simple, practical relief to customers’ pockets,” said Lytania Johnson, CEO of FNB.
“This benefit is grounded in us listening to our customers and understanding the real pressures they face, so we can focus our support where it delivers the most significant difference in their daily lives.”
Johnson said partnering with Boxer allows the bank to reach more customers in communities where affordable groceries play a critical role in household budgets.
By extending the benefit beyond FNB Easy customers to include Aspire and Prime Life customers, the programme is expected to deliver even greater value to South African families.
The initiative forms part of FNB’s broader strategy to combine banking, rewards and retail partnerships to help customers manage the rising cost of living.
Boxer CEO Marek Masojada said the partnership is built around making everyday shopping more affordable.
“The strength of this initiative lies in its simplicity, relevance and the shared commitment behind it. Together, this allows us to deliver a benefit that is easy to understand, simple to access and one that customers can rely on every time they shop.”
Since launching the 99c bread benefit with Pick n Pay in September 2024, FNB says the programme has delivered measurable impact.
More than 6.3 million loaves of bread have been purchased through the initiative, generating over R9.6 million in direct savings for customers.
According to Pieter Woodhatch, CEO of eBucks, the strong uptake demonstrates that customers increasingly value practical rewards that help them meet essential household expenses.
“The 99c bread benefit meets customers where it matters most, at the point of purchase, helping them stretch limited budgets and put food on the table with greater certainty.”
Boxer Commercial Marketing, Retail Media and Factories Group Executive Paul Coetzee said the partnership aligns closely with Boxer’s mission to serve communities where affordability remains a daily priority.
“Boxer serves communities where affordability is critical and small savings add up over time. Together, we’re helping families save on something they buy every week.”
FNB says the Boxer partnership represents the first step in expanding practical, everyday rewards into additional categories as it continues developing benefits that respond to customers’ changing financial needs.
For many South Africans, affordable access to everyday essentials such as bread can make a meaningful difference to monthly household budgets, making the programme an example of how financial institutions and retailers can work together to support financial wellbeing through shared value initiatives.
