McDonald’s South Africa is supporting food security and youth development through Mandela Day initiatives expected to benefit thousands of people across three major cities.
McDonald’s South Africa is commemorating Mandela Day by mobilising employees, Owner-Operators and community partners to support projects that strengthen food security and create opportunities for young people.
Working with local non-profit organisations, employees are packing 5,000 food parcels that will reach approximately 20,000 people across Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. The initiative is supported by a R150,000 cash donation from McDonald’s South Africa.
The company is also investing in youth development through the Nelson Mandela Diepsloot Soccer Tournament, contributing R250,000 in soccer kits, footballs and meals for participants.
Beyond the tournament, McDonald’s South Africa is sponsoring coaching courses for volunteer coaches and delivering a job-readiness workshop to equip young people with practical skills that can support future employment opportunities.
Hosted by the Diepsloot Sport Forum, the tournament will bring together around 1,000 children in the Under-10 to Under-16 age groups. The event is supported by 20 volunteer coaches and referees who dedicate their weekends to developing young football talent and organising community competitions.
Millicent Maroga, Impact Director at McDonald’s South Africa, said Mandela Day highlights the importance of collective action.
“Mandela Day is a powerful reminder that meaningful change happens when people come together in service of others. With more than 15,000 employees across South Africa, we are proud to support communities through both hands-on volunteerism and strategic partnerships.”
The initiatives reflect McDonald’s South Africa’s ongoing commitment to creating positive social impact by working alongside employees, franchisees and community organisations to build stronger, more resilient communities through food support, youth development and skills empowerment.
