Cancer survivors across South Africa are using the Totalsports Women’s Race to share hope, celebrate resilience and encourage early detection through powerful personal journeys.
The Totalsports Women’s Race is about far more than crossing a finish line. For many participants, it has become a celebration of survival, a platform for awareness and a reminder that no one faces cancer alone.
Taking place in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg during August 2026, the event partners with PinkDrive to support cancer awareness, education and screening initiatives across South Africa.
Among those taking part this year is Durban resident Selina Govender, who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and widespread bone metastasis in 2021 at the age of 37.
Following extensive treatment that included surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and ongoing therapy, Govender says her scans remain clear nearly five years later.
She credits movement and exercise with helping her maintain strength and wellbeing while navigating life after diagnosis.
Cape Town participant Rayghanah Cassiem’s story spans more than two decades. Diagnosed with breast cancer during Women’s Month in 2005, she was initially given five years to live.
Instead of allowing the diagnosis to define her future, Cassiem embraced new challenges, taking up hiking, dragon boat paddling and road running. Even after a recurrence that progressed to stage 4 cancer, she continued to focus on living fully and inspiring others facing similar battles.
Today, she dedicates much of her time to supporting cancer outreach programmes and encouraging people to appreciate every day.
Johannesburg resident Ntokozo Dludla also knows the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis. She recalls the fear and uncertainty that followed her diagnosis but says the support of family, friends and her broader community helped carry her through treatment.
Dludla believes physical activity plays an important role in recovery and overall health, helping patients maintain strength, mobility and emotional wellbeing throughout their cancer journeys.
For all three women, the Totalsports Women’s Race represents more than a sporting event. It is an opportunity to connect with others, celebrate life and support an important cause.
Nikki Crous, Head of Marketing at Totalsports, says the race continues to be shaped by the courage and resilience of women who use their experiences to uplift others.
Through its partnership with PinkDrive, the event aims to promote awareness, encourage early detection and provide hope to individuals and families affected by cancer.
As thousands of women prepare to take part in this year’s races, stories like these serve as a powerful reminder that survival, strength and community often go hand in hand.
