Communities unite for GBV awareness walk

Gender Based Violence (GBV) continues to harm families, silence victims, and weaken entire communities. This December, Mustadafin Foundation and Callas Foundation are calling on Cape Town residents to stand together, walk together, and raise their voices for the thousands of women, children, and men affected by GBV every year.

On Saturday, 06 December 2025, the two organisations will host a family-friendly 5km Walk and Run at Nantes Park. The event aims to raise awareness, strengthen community solidarity, and generate much-needed funds for ongoing GBV support programmes.

The entry fee is only R50, making it accessible for families, youth groups, and community organisations across the city. There will also be spot prizes to encourage participation and add a sense of celebration to a serious cause.

“Mustadafin Foundation has worked within vulnerable communities for more than three decades,” shares Ghairunisa Johnstone-Cassiem, director of Mustadafin Foundation. “The organisation provides emergency relief, counselling, education, and ongoing support to victims of violence and abuse. Our programmes reach families who often have nowhere else to turn.”

The Callas Foundation is equally committed to empowering survivors, building resilience, and creating safer neighbourhoods.

Both organisations agree that community involvement is one of the strongest tools to fight GBV. When communities unite, people feel seen, supported, and encouraged to speak out. Silence protects perpetrators. Solidarity protects survivors.

If every man helps his neighbour, then who will need help? It starts with each of us, one step at a time.
