TNPA finishes Bayhead Road upgrade early

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has delivered an important win for South Africa’s logistics and economic recovery. The rehabilitation of Durban’s Bayhead Road – a vital link between the Port of Durban and the national road network – has been completed a month ahead of schedule, just in time for the festive season surge.

The upgrade, which began in June 2025, was expected to take six months, but early completion now means smoother cargo movement, reduced congestion, and improved access to port terminals, warehouses, and industrial facilities. The road supports an estimated 13,000 vehicles daily and plays a key role in keeping goods flowing across the country.

TNPA invested R76 million into strengthening and modernising the road, making it more durable and resistant to cracking and heavy-duty wear. These improvements not only prolong the road’s lifespan but also reduce future maintenance needs — a long-term gain for national logistics efficiency.

Port Manager Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana said the milestone reflects TNPA’s commitment to the Reinvent for Growth strategy and its focus on creating value through reliable, world-class infrastructure. She also highlighted the importance of collaboration with port users and stakeholders in achieving the early finish.

The project brought wider socio-economic benefits as well, creating approximately 204 jobs and supporting five SMMEs during construction — ensuring that local communities shared in the opportunities generated by the upgrade.

With the festive season underway and South Africa’s logistics system under pressure, the early reopening of Bayhead Road represents a positive step toward restoring stability, competitiveness and confidence in the country’s trade ecosystem.
