Midvaal Hospital Leads with Renewable Power

In a major win for healthcare resilience and community well-being, Midvaal Private Hospital in Vereeniging has switched on a new R34 million renewable-energy system that promises stable, clean and reliable power for lifesaving medical services.

Supported by funding from Standard Bank, the project positions the hospital as a leader in sustainable healthcare — reducing pressure on the national grid while ensuring that operating theatres, ICU wards and essential diagnostic equipment remain powered even during energy disruptions.

The system includes a 1.2MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant and a 2.5MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), expected to generate over 1,426 MWh of clean energy in its first year. This shift to renewable power significantly cuts the hospital’s reliance on traditional supply sources and strengthens its ability to deliver uninterrupted care.

Built in partnership with Bespoke Energy, TAQA Energy, and leading technology providers including LONGi, Sungrow, and SolarMD, the installation is engineered for high performance in a demanding healthcare environment.

Standard Bank’s Executive Head for Energy, Infrastructure & Mining, Deerosh Maharaj, says the project is an example of how sustainable finance can directly improve community health outcomes.
“Reliable energy is fundamental to patient care. By funding this installation, we are supporting a healthcare facility that serves thousands of families and relies on constant power to save lives.”

Hospital Manager Andre Joubert adds that the investment will enhance both medical efficiency and patient confidence:
“Power stability is a clinical necessity. This renewable system ensures that our teams can focus on delivering quality care regardless of external grid pressures.”

The renewable-energy upgrade also forms part of Standard Bank’s wider commitment to mobilising R450 billion in sustainable finance by 2028, strengthening Africa’s just energy transition and supporting vital sectors such as healthcare.

For local communities, the benefits are clear:
✔ More reliable healthcare services
✔ Reduced exposure to rising electricity costs
✔ Increased sustainability and environmental responsibility
✔ A replicable model for hospitals across South Africa

Midvaal Private Hospital’s leap into renewable energy shows how innovation and partnership can drive social impact — improving quality of life today while building a healthier, more resilient future for all.
