Emerging Artists Shine at Comic Con

Emerging artists showcased their work at Comic Con 2026, connecting with audiences, building their brands and highlighting the role of creative programmes in developing new talent.

Creative talent was on full display at Comic Con 2026, where 10 emerging artists exhibited their work to thousands of visitors over the weekend. Supported by the City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department, the artists formed part of the Emerging Artist exhibition in Artist Alley, each hosting their own booth to present original work and engage directly with fans and collectors.

The participating artists completed a training programme ahead of the event, designed to prepare them for exhibition. The programme included workshops, mentorship and hands-on preparation focused on presentation, audience engagement and commercial viability.

City representatives highlighted the importance of supporting emerging creatives, noting that programmes like this help artists build skills, access new audiences and strengthen the broader creative sector.

Artists were selected from three Mural Meet Up Sessions held in public spaces, aimed at attracting a diverse range of creatives working across disciplines.

Selected participants then completed a one-month development programme, supporting them to refine their work, develop products, improve presentation skills and engage confidently with the public.

Facilitators Clyde Beech and Robin Moodley provided additional support through artwork reviews, feedback and ongoing guidance in preparation for Comic Con.

Officials also noted that events such as Comic Con play an important role in skills development, while creating opportunities for exposure, networking and access to creative and commercial industries.

This year’s cohort included multidisciplinary creatives, mural and digital artists, illustrators, and artists specialising in comics, anime and manga.

The 10 participating artists are:

Malik Fredericks from Woodstock
Darney Marks from Mitchells Plain
Gabriela Valerio from Brooklyn
Kyle Murphy from Athlone
Logan Nathan from Kuils River
Sachin Parbhoo from Plumstead
Shadley Davids from Kensington
Simbarashe Machona from Blackheath
Thurston Jacobs from Kraaifontein
Bhongoletu Maholwana from Gugulethu
