Peregrine Capital Makes Maths Fun Again

A new maths initiative by Peregrine Capital is changing how learners experience mathematics. The 24SumMore Maths Competition, held at the company’s Sandton offices, brought together 24 finalists from 18 primary schools across Gauteng in a high-energy contest aimed at building confidence and excitement around numbers.

The competition, based on the popular “24 Game” format, challenges learners to use arithmetic and mental agility to reach the number 24 using four given numbers. The format encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and speed — turning maths into a lively, engaging exercise rather than a classroom chore.

According to Jacques Conradie, CEO of Peregrine Capital and a former national champion in the 24 Game, the competition is designed to shift learners’ perception of maths.
“We’re bringing the fun back into maths,” Conradie said. “When kids enjoy maths, they gain confidence — and that confidence becomes the foundation for future excellence. Confident kids don’t just solve problems; they learn to love solving them.”

The pilot programme attracted participation from 54 schools, each hosting classroom rounds before sending their top learners to the finals. The 24 finalists — from grades 4 to 6 — competed at the same level, showcasing skill, composure, and quick thinking.

To reward excellence and promote long-term learning, Peregrine Capital awarded investment accounts to the winners and finalists, encouraging early financial literacy.
1st place: Olwethu Ndebele (Eastleigh Primary School) – R25,000
2nd place: Talea Papa (Gibson Pillay Learning Academy) – R15,000
3rd place: Kemoratile Nyundu (Eastleigh Primary School) – R10,000
All finalists also received R5,000 in investment accounts, while their schools received matching prizes. In addition, a teacher who demonstrated exceptional commitment received a brand-new iPad.

The programme’s design emphasises maths as a life skill that strengthens resilience and confidence. Peregrine Capital says this approach is about nurturing problem-solvers rather than rote learners — helping young people see the subject as both accessible and enjoyable.

Following the success of the Gauteng pilot, 24SumMore will expand nationally in 2026, opening entries to learners from Grades 4 to 6 across South Africa. The expansion forms part of Peregrine Capital’s broader commitment to youth development and education through innovative learning experiences.

“What we’ve seen in the pilot has been extraordinary,” Conradie said. “The passion and joy from learners and teachers alike are just the beginning. We look forward to introducing this format to thousands of learners nationwide.”

The 24SumMore competition highlights how collaboration between the private sector and education can help reshape attitudes toward learning. For many of the young finalists, the contest was not just about winning — it was about discovering that maths can be creative, social, and fun.
