Mobil Give a Drop Backs Education

Mobil and African Group Lubricants are turning community nominations into practical support through the Give a Drop campaign, beginning with educational assistance for a learner in Springs.

The campaign invites South Africans to identify people, projects and community needs where targeted assistance could make a meaningful difference.

Its first “drop” has provided a 17-year-old home-schooled learner in Strubenvale, Springs, with a laptop to help her access online educational resources, conduct research and complete her studies.

The learner was nominated by her grandmother, who recognised that not having access to a suitable computer was creating a practical barrier to her education.

For a home-schooled learner who depends heavily on digital resources, the device provides more than connectivity. It gives her a dedicated tool to research schoolwork, access learning material and continue developing the skills she needs to complete her education.

The support also extends beyond the initial donation. The laptop has been provided with a subscription and is available for the learner’s continued full-time use.

She hopes to complete matric, continue her studies and eventually become a kindergarten teacher.

The donation marks the first intervention delivered through Mobil Give a Drop, which is being implemented by Mobil and African Group Lubricants (AG Lubricants).

Rather than applying the same intervention across different communities, the campaign uses nominations to identify specific needs and determine where practical support could create longer-term value.

Kagiso Donga, IT Systems & Operations Manager at AG Lubricants, said the learner’s nomination demonstrated the type of opportunity the campaign was designed to support.

“In this case, the need was clear. The student had the ambition and commitment to continue her education but lacked an essential tool that could help her do so,” Donga said.

“The laptop helps address that gap while providing a platform for her to continue developing her skills and working towards her longer-term goals.”

The campaign is built around the idea that one targeted intervention can create a wider ripple effect.

For the Springs learner, access to a laptop supports her immediate education, but could ultimately contribute to her reaching a career where she hopes to educate other children.

“The ripple effect of a drop starts small, but its impact can extend much further when it gives someone the tools or opportunity to move forward,” Donga said.

Mobil Give a Drop will continue inviting community-led nominations as the campaign expands its support to other identified needs across South Africa.

By allowing communities to help identify where assistance is needed, the campaign aims to turn individual nominations into practical interventions that provide people with tools and opportunities to move forward.
