SSAF, Pick n Pay Support Debaters

Safer South Africa Foundation and Pick n Pay School Club are supporting 241 young debaters nationwide with grocery hampers, linking food security to youth leadership development.

The initiative extends the organisations’ Youth4SaferSouthAfrica Debate and Leadership Development Programme beyond skills development by addressing some of the socioeconomic pressures facing participating learners and their families.

Grocery hampers containing non-perishable food are being distributed to 241 high school learners across all nine provinces, combining immediate household support with a programme focused on developing young people’s communication, research, critical-thinking and leadership skills.

The intervention reflects a shared-value approach in which private-sector resources support a nonprofit youth-development programme while responding to a practical social need.

Since the partnership began in 2020, more than 1,000 families have received support through the initiative, according to the Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF).

SSAF CEO Riah Phiyega said young people’s ability to develop as leaders cannot be separated from the circumstances they experience outside the classroom.

“Debating and leadership development equip young people with the confidence to express themselves, think critically and engage constructively with issues affecting society. However, we recognise that a learner’s development is influenced by circumstances beyond the classroom,” Phiyega said.

The Youth4SaferSouthAfrica programme uses structured debating to give public-school learners opportunities to research social issues, develop informed arguments and communicate their views while listening to different perspectives.

The programme forms part of SSAF’s broader social crime-prevention strategy, which places education, youth empowerment and community participation at the centre of efforts to strengthen safer communities.

For Pick n Pay School Club, the grocery-hamper intervention connects corporate social investment with an established youth-development platform rather than treating food relief as a standalone intervention.

Catherine Bothma of Pick n Pay School Club said meeting immediate needs could create conditions in which learners are better able to participate in leadership development.

“When learners’ immediate survival needs are met, they are then able to focus on the development and leadership that Youth4SaferSouthAfrica instils in them,” Bothma said.

She said combining material assistance with leadership development could also encourage young people to view themselves as active participants in improving their communities rather than only as recipients of assistance.

The approach brings together two dimensions of social impact: short-term household support through food assistance and longer-term investment in the social capital of young people through leadership, communication and civic participation.

Provincial SSAF coordinators are collecting hampers from designated Pick n Pay supermarkets before coordinating distribution to participating schools.

Initial handovers were completed in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. SSAF said distributions in North West and the Northern Cape were scheduled for 26 October, with the remaining provincial distributions expected to be completed before the end of October.

With beneficiaries spanning all nine provinces, the initiative also demonstrates how collaboration between the nonprofit and private sectors can use existing national networks to extend the reach of social-development programmes.

For the 241 participating learners, the support adds a household food-security component to a programme designed to strengthen their ability to participate, communicate and lead within their schools and communities.
