Weelee Targets December Travel Costs

Weelee is helping South African families reduce December travel costs by matching vehicles to long-distance journeys as record fuel prices increase pressure on household budgets nationwide.

The pre-owned vehicle marketplace is focusing its December support on helping motorists compare fuel consumption, seating capacity, luggage space and towing requirements before families begin travelling across provinces during the festive season.

The intervention comes after inland 95 petrol increased by R3.33 a litre in October to R30.25, significantly increasing the cost of long-distance road travel.

With public schools closing for learners on 9 December, thousands of families are expected to travel between major cities, provinces and rural communities over the holiday period.

Weelee CEO Errol Levin said the fuel price was outside motorists’ control, but families could make more informed decisions about the vehicles they use.

“December is when many people discover that the car they bought for everyday use is not the car they need for the trips they actually take,” said Levin.

“Families cannot control the fuel price, but they can choose a vehicle that suits their journey. Our team is there, at the megastore and online, to help them make that decision with confidence.”

The financial difference between vehicles can exceed R1 000 on a single long-distance return journey.

On a Johannesburg-Durban return trip of approximately 1 140 kilometres, a vehicle consuming six litres per 100 kilometres would use around R2 070 in fuel at the October inland 95 petrol price.

A vehicle consuming nine litres per 100 kilometres would cost approximately R3 100 in fuel over the same journey.

Class 1 toll fees add approximately R695 to the return trip.

Families travelling between Johannesburg and Polokwane face a similar calculation.

Over the approximately 660-kilometre return journey, a vehicle consuming six litres per 100 kilometres would use around R1 200 in fuel, compared with approximately R1 800 for a vehicle consuming nine litres per 100 kilometres.

Return tolls add approximately R465.

The savings can increase when larger families travel together.

According to calculations provided by Weelee, two vehicles each consuming 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres would cost approximately R4 480 in combined fuel on a Johannesburg-Durban return journey, with another R1 390 required for tolls.

A seven-seater consuming nine litres per 100 kilometres would cost approximately R3 100 in fuel and R695 in tolls, reducing the family’s combined transport expenditure by around R2 000.

Weelee is using the figures to encourage motorists to consider the practical requirements of their December journeys rather than focusing only on the purchase price of a vehicle.

Its team is assisting buyers at its Centurion megastore and online with comparisons covering seating, boot capacity, fuel consumption and towing capability.

The company says its pre-owned vehicles undergo independent condition checks, with service-history information available to buyers.

For motorists considering changing vehicles before December, Weelee also provides vehicle valuations and access to competing offers through its dealer network.

Levin stressed that the initiative is not aimed at encouraging every family to replace an existing vehicle.

“We are not suggesting anyone sell a car that serves them well,” he said.

“Our role is to give families clear information, a wide choice of properly checked vehicles, and practical help from our team.”

The focus on vehicle efficiency comes as transport costs continue to place pressure on South African household finances.

For families travelling hundreds of kilometres to reconnect with relatives during December, the difference between vehicle size, fuel consumption and the number of cars used can translate into significant savings.

Weelee believes planning those decisions before the festive travel period could help families reduce unnecessary transport expenditure while ensuring their vehicles are appropriate for the journeys they intend to make.

With December travel approaching, the company’s message to motorists is to calculate the cost of the journey before setting off and consider fuel efficiency, capacity and vehicle condition alongside the family’s overall travel budget.
