Trace and MultiChoice have launched Trace Ngoma on DStv Channel 326, introducing a hyper-local music channel designed to connect television audiences with emerging digital talent.
The new channel represents a strategic shift in African music broadcasting, combining traditional TV reach with digital participation through upcoming platforms Trace+ and Trace Next.
Trace Ngoma focuses on South African sounds including amapiano, Afro-pop, maskandi, hip-hop, gqom, lekompo and urban gospel. The channel is designed to provide independent artists with access to broadcast exposure while enabling audiences to discover new talent through integrated digital platforms.
According to Trace, the new format reflects a broader evolution in how audiences consume music and how artists build careers in a digital-first environment.
“Trace Ngoma is not simply a TV channel, it is a new kind of media infrastructure,” said Olivier Laouchez. “By connecting television and digital platforms, we are creating new pathways for artists to reach national audiences.”
Trace+ will allow artists to upload content, share performances and build audiences online, while Trace Next will act as a talent discovery platform linking digital creators to television exposure.
Early performance indicators suggest strong audience demand for locally produced content. According to TAMS data, the channel recorded a 1,096% increase in viewership year-on-year, growing from 892,000 viewers in February 2025 to over 10 million viewers in February 2026.
Willington Ngwepe said the performance highlights growing demand for culturally relevant programming.
“These ratings confirm that audiences are looking for content that reflects their identity, language and culture,” said Ngwepe.
The official launch event took place in Johannesburg on 25 March 2026, featuring performances from artists including Makhadzi, Lacabra, Mthunzi and other emerging performers.
Trace Ngoma is now available on DStv Channel 326, with Trace+ and Trace Next expected to launch soon as part of a broader ecosystem connecting artists, audiences and digital platforms.
