Cape Town lights up with LUMENOCITY

Cape Town’s Inner City is set to glow this autumn as LUMENOCITY, a large-scale light and art festival, transforms the historic Company’s Garden into an immersive after-dark experience.

Over four evenings, the Garden will come alive with striking light installations, interactive experiences and large-scale projections. Blending art, technology and storytelling, LUMENOCITY invites visitors to explore familiar spaces in entirely new ways, turning the urban landscape into something both playful and awe-inspiring.

At the heart of the festival is a celebration of creativity and collaboration, with local artists working together to produce visually powerful displays that quite literally light up the city. From interactive exhibits to food from local vendors, the experience is designed to be as social as it is sensory, bringing people together in a shared moment of wonder.

Standout installations include Halo Chamber, a towering interactive circular LED column concealing a hidden 5 x 5 metre cave of living light, and Beam of Hope, a dramatic vertical installation that rises into the night sky, signalling the presence of LUMENOCITY across the city. Visitors can also expect moments of large-scale video mapping projected onto surrounding architecture.

More than a visual spectacle, LUMENOCITY forms part of a broader effort to re-energise the city centre. Backed by The Mission for Inner City Cape Town, the festival aligns with a vision to create vibrant, people-focused public spaces that encourage connection and exploration.

“LUMENOCITY speaks directly to our vision for the Inner City,” says Tim Harris. “It’s about creating moments that draw people back into the CBD, encouraging them to explore, connect and rediscover the city in new ways. By activating public spaces after dark, we’re not only showcasing Cape Town’s incredible creative talent, but also supporting local businesses and building a more vibrant, inclusive city centre.”

Founder Gareth Hadden adds: “My dream with LUMENOCITY has always been to create something world-class, rooted in South African creativity and built to inspire wonder.”

LUMENOCITY offers a fresh, family-friendly way to experience Cape Town — celebrating the magic of light, art and connection in one of the country’s most iconic public spaces.
