Young rugby talent eyes Ireland

East London rugby player Carter Claasen, 14, has been selected for an international development tour to Ireland, offering valuable experience and growth opportunities in global youth rugby.

Carter Claasen (14), a talented young rugby player from East London, has been selected to represent the BRSI Bulldogs on an international rugby development tour to Ireland in December 2026, marking an important milestone in his promising rugby journey.

Carter’s progress in the sport reflects dedication, discipline, and a strong passion for rugby from an early age.

He has already represented Border at U13 level, competed at the prestigious Craven Week tournament, and earned a rugby scholarship to Hudson Park High School. These achievements highlight his potential as a developing young player within South Africa’s competitive rugby structures.

The Ireland tour offers Carter an opportunity to train, compete, and gain exposure in an international rugby environment, an experience that can play a meaningful role in developing both skills and confidence.

“I’m most excited about representing my team internationally, experiencing a new country, and growing both as a player and as a young man,” Carter says.

For Carter and his family, the tour represents more than a sporting opportunity. It is also a chance to build confidence, broaden horizons, and take an important step forward in a potential rugby pathway.

“As a parent, I am incredibly proud of Carter,” his father says. “This opportunity means so much to him, and we are grateful for the support he has received so far.”

Carter’s journey has already received encouragement from friends, family, and members of the local community who believe in supporting young talent and helping young athletes reach their goals.

“The support has been overwhelming and truly humbling,” his family says. “It shows how people can come together to uplift a young athlete’s dream.”

While Carter has secured his place on the tour, funding the experience remains a challenge. The total cost of the tour is approximately R70,000, which includes travel, accommodation, and participation in the international development programme.

“If the full amount is not raised, we will continue to do everything we can to make a plan,” his family says. “This opportunity means everything to Carter.”

As Carter prepares for this international experience, public support can help make this opportunity possible.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me,” Carter says. “It really means a lot to me and motivates me to keep working hard.”
