Cape Town residents are gaining faster digital access as the City replaces 590 SmartCape computers across 50 public libraries, supporting education, employment and essential online services.
The technology upgrade forms part of a broader programme to modernise SmartCape computers available to residents through the City’s public library network.
The project is being implemented by the City of Cape Town’s Information Systems and Technology Department and will eventually extend to all SmartCape computers across City libraries.
So far, 590 computers at 50 libraries have been replaced, while another 379 computers are scheduled for future upgrades.
SmartCape provides residents with access to computers and digital services through public libraries, making the facilities particularly important for people who may not have reliable internet access or computers at home.
The upgraded computers are providing faster and more reliable access for residents using libraries to complete schoolwork, search and apply for employment, access online services and meet other digital needs.
For learners and students, access to functioning computers can provide an important connection to online educational resources, research and assignments.
Job seekers can similarly use the facilities to search for vacancies, prepare applications and access employment platforms without requiring their own computer or internet connection.
The investment also strengthens libraries’ changing role within communities, extending their function beyond access to books to providing residents with essential digital infrastructure.
With a further 379 computers still to be upgraded, the SmartCape technology refresh will continue expanding more reliable digital access across Cape Town’s public library network.
