Hyundai Automotive South Africa is demonstrating real economic mobility, with the rise of Zweli Sibiya from informal work to dealership leadership highlighting what internal transformation looks like in practice.
Sibiya, now Dealer Principal at Hyundai Benoni, was born in Soweto and entered the workforce without formal tertiary education. He began his career as a security guard and later sold vegetables at Johannesburg Park Station to supplement his income, developing practical sales skills through daily interaction with customers.
In 2020, he joined the Hyundai Benoni dealership as a Sales Executive. His consistency, work ethic and ability to connect with people quickly set him apart in Gauteng’s highly competitive automotive sector.
His potential was recognised by Promise Twala, then Dealer Principal at Hyundai Benoni, who promoted Sibiya to Sales Manager after identifying his leadership capability and disciplined approach to performance.
When Twala later moved to lead Hyundai The Glen dealership, Sibiya was appointed Dealer Principal at Hyundai Benoni, where he now leads a 38-member sales team. The dealership operates in one of South Africa’s most competitive automotive markets.
Sibiya credits his progression to resilience, adaptability and mentorship, saying his background shaped his leadership style and approach to team development.
Hyundai Automotive South Africa CEO Stanley Anderson says the company’s focus on promoting from within enables individuals to progress based on performance and commitment rather than formal qualifications alone.
In a country facing high unemployment and limited upward mobility, Sibiya’s progression illustrates how opportunity, mentorship and recognition of informal skills can translate into leadership and long-term economic inclusion.
