Sixty-seven learners have transformed their voices into a published poetry collection, celebrating Nelson Mandela’s legacy while promoting literacy, creativity and youth empowerment in communities.
A new poetry collection, Mandela in Young Voices, is giving young South Africans the opportunity to honour Nelson Mandela through the power of words while encouraging a lifelong love of reading and writing.
Published by Book World South Africa (BWSA), the anthology features poems written by 67 learners from four primary schools in the Bojanala District, providing a platform for children to express their ideas, creativity and hopes for the future.
The publication forms part of Book World’s broader mission to strengthen literacy and improve educational outcomes across underserved communities. The organisation believes that literacy is the foundation for personal growth, academic success and long-term social development.
Book World has developed its impact model around five core focus areas: Literacy Material Development, Literacy Material Donation, Literacy Skills Development, Library Hub Functionality and Literacy Promotion. Together, these programmes aim to expand access to quality learning resources while creating environments where reading and learning can thrive.
The organisation works closely with schools, parents, community leaders, researchers, civil society organisations and private sector partners to build sustainable literacy programmes that respond to local needs.
Book World says sustainable literacy development requires collaboration, with partners working together to create lasting educational opportunities for young people.
Beyond publishing learning resources, the organisation is expanding its footprint across South Africa through literacy projects, community partnerships and educational initiatives that promote reading as a lifelong skill.
Through Mandela in Young Voices, the young authors demonstrate that every child has a story worth telling and that providing opportunities for creative expression can help build confidence, strengthen literacy and inspire future generations of South African writers and leaders.
