Global House Music Pioneer Honoured

The Basadi in Music Awards will honour internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter Monique Bingham with its 2026 International Recognition Award for her lasting influence on global house music.

As the awards celebrate their fifth anniversary under the theme REWIND, organisers say Bingham’s career represents artistic excellence, authenticity and the power of music to unite audiences across continents.

For almost three decades, Bingham has established herself as one of the defining voices in soulful house music through her distinctive vocals, songwriting and collaborations with some of the genre’s biggest producers.

Her musical journey has seen her work alongside internationally respected artists while building a particularly strong connection with South African audiences through collaborations with industry pioneers including Black Coffee, Mobi Dixon and DJ Christos.

For many South Africans, Monique Bingham’s music has become part of the soundtrack to countless celebrations, dance floors and shared memories, earning her a loyal following that has continued to grow over the years.

The International Recognition Award celebrates women whose contribution to the global music industry has inspired generations through innovation, creativity and excellence.

Reacting to the announcement, Bingham described the recognition as one of the greatest honours of her career.

“Receiving the 2026 International Recognition Award from Basadi in Music Awards is an honour I will cherish for the rest of my life. I am deeply humbled and incredibly grateful,” she said.

She said South Africa has always occupied a special place in her heart because of the country’s passion for house music and the unwavering support she has received from local audiences throughout her career.

“The greatest privilege has been creating music that connects people across cultures and generations. I never imagined my music would become part of the soundtrack of so many lives in South Africa. That love has been one of the greatest blessings of my career,” she said.

Basadi in Music Awards Founder and Chief Executive Officer Hloni Modise-Matau said Bingham’s influence extends far beyond music charts.

“Monique Bingham’s artistry has transcended borders and generations, making her a deserving recipient whose music has become part of South Africa’s cultural story,” she said.

Joburg Theatre Chief Executive Officer Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema said the theatre is proud to celebrate an artist whose music has connected people across the world while continuing to support the Basadi in Music Awards’ mission of recognising exceptional women in the music industry.

Ms Manaileng Maphike of Maphike Attorneys Inc added that Bingham’s longevity, artistic excellence and ability to transcend borders through music made her an ideal recipient of the 2026 International Recognition Award.

The award will be presented during the Basadi in Music Awards ceremony on 8 August 2026, where Bingham is also expected to perform alongside some of South Africa’s leading female artists.

The recognition reflects the awards’ continued commitment to celebrating women who have shaped the music industry while inspiring future generations through talent, resilience and lasting cultural impact.
