Residents Flock to Neighbourhood Opera Series

The City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Development Branch partnered with the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble to deliver a free concert series across Langa, Bothasig and Fish Hoek, bringing live opera directly into local neighbourhoods.

Part of the Opera in Your Neighbourhood programme, the initiative aims to expand access to high-quality cultural experiences by taking performances beyond traditional theatre spaces and into community venues. The concerts were designed to make the arts more accessible while breaking down barriers linked to geography and affordability.

The Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble, made up of 18 performers and a chorus master, entertained audiences with a diverse programme that included opera, musical theatre, African traditional music, classical and gospel selections.

City officials said the strong turnout reflected growing community interest in accessible cultural programming.

“The response from residents has been inspiring. By partnering with organisations like Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet, we are bringing high-quality performances into neighbourhoods so that more people can enjoy the arts close to home,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

Through initiatives like Opera in Your Neighbourhood, the City continues to strengthen community engagement while promoting cultural inclusion and creative expression across Cape Town.
