Honouring the spirit of Nelson Mandela and to inspire positive change in the local communities, Sun City Resort partnered with five service providers to bring 250 pairs of hands to give Itekeng Home Based Care non-profit organisation a make-over for Mandela Month.
A request to the Sun International service providers for assistance resulted in Lumbela Contractors, Tsebo Solutions, RPM Plastics, Bidvest Topturf and Mankwe Gametrackers coming on board with the iconic resort to make a difference on Mandela Day in a whirlwind 24-hours of action and upgrades.
Sun City has been a long-time supporter of Itekeng, a registered non-profit organisation which caters for more than 80 beneficiaries including disadvantaged families, disabled people, and abused or abandoned children.
A total of 250 from every company got their hands dirty doing gardening, painting, construction work, and donating groceries, blankets, tables and chairs, stationery, learning charts and learning supplies, to create a classroom.
Sun City donated groceries, blankets, tables and chairs, a kitchen container and the installation of brick paving worth R49 000. Lumbela Contractors repainted the interiors and donated paint for the exterior of the current classrooms, converted the existing container into a classroom and installed kitchen cabinets worth R35 000.
Mankwe Gametrackers provided fencing, stationery, learning charts as well as volunteers and transport on the day, in a financial contribution of R30 000. Bidvest Topturf donated a 2 500l JoJo tank, 500 vegetable seedlings, garden tools and volunteers to manage the planting. Tsebo Solutions and RPM repaired and replaced lights, fittings and plugs in the kitchen container, and built a wall in front of the centre to prevent flooding and improve access on rainy days. They also provided a gate and wheelchair.
Sun City SED and Community Stakeholder Manager, Tebogo Mokgejane said the heart-warming day had proved the power of collaboration. “The objective of the contributions was to truly impact the beneficiaries in ways which matter, from poverty alleviation emanating from food seedlings, providing nutrition and allowing the children to be more productive at school with full stomachs,” he said.
“By improving the facility’s infrastructure, we have added comfort for all residents and staff to be warm and dry. The difference which was made to Itekeng within a few hours was incredible and will leave a lasting impact for the staff and beneficiaries well beyond Mandela Month.”
