Vygieskraal cycling track set return

Plans to reinstate the cycling track at Vygieskraal Stadium signal renewed investment in community sport, improving access to quality facilities and supporting athlete development in Cape Town.

The iconic Vygieskraal Stadium in Athlone is set for an important new phase of development, with plans to reinstate its cycling track included in the City of Cape Town’s draft 2026/27 budget.

For decades, Vygieskraal Stadium has played a central role in community sport, hosting generations of athletes since the athletics track was first laid in the late 1970s, followed by the construction of the stadium in the early 1980s.

In recent years, the City’s Recreation and Parks Department has invested just under R7.5 million in refurbishing the facility. Improvements have included upgrades to the rugby field parking area and fencing, installation of new floodlighting, roofing repairs, and restoration of the shot put and long jump areas. Plumbing and electrical systems have also been upgraded, alongside the installation of new spectator seating.

The next milestone focuses on bringing cycling back to Vygieskraal Stadium. The former cycling track, which was decommissioned when palm trees were installed, is set to be fully reinstated. The palm trees currently on site will be carefully relocated within the precinct once reconstruction work begins.

The project is currently in the detailed design phase, with cost estimates being finalised. A proposed budget of R20 million has been allocated for implementation during the 2026/27 financial year.

“We are not just rebuilding a track, we are restoring a space for opportunity, talent and community pride,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

“This investment forms part of our broader plan to strengthen and expand access to sport across the city. As we move into the next phase, we will engage with both athletics and cycling communities to ensure the facility meets their needs and remains safe and accessible in the long term.”

The Vygieskraal upgrade forms part of a broader programme to improve community access to quality sporting and recreational infrastructure across Cape Town.

During the current financial year, the City has completed major upgrades at several facilities.

The Wesfleur Athletics Stadium refurbishment, valued at R31 million, included a refurbished tartan track and field event areas, repairs to seating, walkways, ablution blocks and fencing, along with a new perimeter fence, upgraded floodlights and irrigation system.

The Blue Downs Athletics Stadium refurbishment, costing R30 million, delivered a fully repaired tartan track, improved field event areas, grandstand upgrades, change room improvements, landscaping and compliance enhancements.

The Manenberg “The Greens” Sports Ground upgrade, valued at approximately R20 million, included a new full-size astro turf field, two five-a-side pitches with floodlights, multi-purpose courts, a warm-up track, outdoor gym equipment, play facilities and upgraded roads, fencing and lighting.

At Fisantekraal Sports Ground, a R13.7 million synthetic soccer pitch was delivered as part of the Fisantekraal Recreation Hub, providing year-round access to quality sporting facilities supported by seating and spectator infrastructure.

The Bishop Lavis Sports Ground upgrade, valued at R27 million, included a synthetic soccer pitch, family park, athletics track, cricket oval, hard courts, floodlighting, improved road access, parking and enhanced security features.

Together, these projects demonstrate continued investment in community sport infrastructure, supporting active lifestyles, talent development and inclusive recreational opportunities across Cape Town.
