A new R47 million study library is opening access to educational resources in Eshane while creating jobs and business opportunities for the surrounding community.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli officially handed over the Eshane Study Library in uMvoti Local Municipality on Friday, 21 August 2026, following its completion at the end of July.
The facility represents a significant investment in educational and community infrastructure and is intended to provide learners, educators and residents with improved access to information, study facilities and learning resources.
Delivered through the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture under MEC Mntomuhle Khawula, the development includes the main library building, a guard house, parking facilities and secure perimeter fencing.
Ntuli described the library as an investment in literacy, education and the long-term development of the community.
Access to knowledge and educational resources, he said, remains an important part of creating opportunities and empowering communities, particularly for young people.
“Investments in libraries and educational infrastructure contribute directly to building informed, skilled and resilient communities,” Ntuli said.
The project’s impact also extended beyond the completed facility.
During construction, 35 people from the local community secured employment opportunities, including women, young people and people with disabilities.
More than R1.9 million was also awarded in subcontracting opportunities to local businesses, allowing some of the project’s investment to flow directly into the surrounding economy.
The combination of infrastructure development, employment and local procurement demonstrates how public investment can generate several forms of community benefit from a single project.
While the completed library provides a permanent educational resource, its construction created short-term employment and opportunities for emerging businesses to participate in the project’s delivery.
For learners in Eshane, the facility provides a dedicated environment where they can study and access information and educational resources.
It will also serve the broader community, providing residents with a public space for learning, information and skills development.
“Libraries remain important community spaces where learners and residents can access information, develop skills and pursue educational opportunities,” Ntuli said.
The Eshane Study Library forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to expand access to educational and cultural infrastructure, particularly in communities where access to such resources can support broader social and economic development.
Ntuli commended the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, contractors, community members and other stakeholders involved in completing the project.
With the facility now handed over, the R47 million investment leaves Eshane with permanent community infrastructure while also having generated employment and more than R1.9 million in opportunities for local enterprises during its construction.
