Women Drive EPWP Success in Admin, Data

During Women’s Month, City officials visited two female-led EPWP projects, highlighting how women strengthen administration while growing their skills and careers.

Women Leading in Audit Readiness

At the Audit Readiness and Support Project, led by Kamva Afikile Juta, seven women recruited through EPWP are ensuring compliance and accuracy in reporting. Their work includes verifying identity documents and signed contracts, conducting site visits, and engaging with line departments. By safeguarding the integrity of the City’s EPWP data, the team is contributing to both accountability and service excellence.

Beyond their day-to-day tasks, the participants are encouraged to pursue personal development opportunities such as further studies and obtaining driver’s licences.

“The programme has taught me discipline, resilience and focus. It’s not just about qualifications or work experience — it’s about unlocking parts of yourself you didn’t even know were there,” said Buhle Inganathi Majangaza from Gugulethu.

“I’ve gained communication skills, technical know-how and the confidence to take action. As women, we have a unique perspective and a voice that can shape the future,” added Alicia Jacoman from Mamre.

Women Driving Data Accuracy

At the Data Centre: Data Capturing Project, led by Nomvula Oliphant, 15 women are maintaining the accuracy of the City’s Jobseeker database and the EPWP National Reporting System. Their responsibilities range from data capturing and compliance verification to uploading labour reports and providing administrative support.

Participants say the project has equipped them with lifelong skills. “Beyond earning an income, I’ve gained knowledge, problem-solving abilities and leadership skills that will benefit me throughout my career,” said Sinazo Masiba from Gugulethu.

Through EPWP, Mandilakhe Wonci from Eerste River has obtained her driver’s licence, studied for an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration, and is now pursuing Advanced Management Studies. “The programme has taught me confidence, teamwork and discipline,” she said.

City Commends Women’s Impact

Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, praised the women for their commitment and professionalism.

“Women’s Month is a reminder that talent, commitment, and excellence are not bound by gender. These women are not only strengthening the City’s administration, but also building the skills and confidence to thrive in any sector. Their work shows the real power of the EPWP,” Twigg said.

About the EPWP

The EPWP is a national initiative implemented by the City of Cape Town to provide temporary work opportunities and training to unemployed residents, improving their future employability. Since its inception in 2004, the programme has created more than 15 million work opportunities nationwide.
