Youth-led programme empowers local learners and tackles social challenges

Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility, a majority-owned subsidiary of ENGIE, launched a transformative initiative across schools in Somerset East, Cookhouse, Adelaide, and Bedford to directly address social challenges. Started in 2022 with guidance from qualified social workers, the programme has evolved to empower local youth to lead. Trained young Social Influencers from the community now facilitate monthly sessions at 12 primary schools for Grades 6, 7, and 8, giving learners tools to overcome critical social issues.

“We’re creating a support network that empowers both facilitators and learners,” said Zandile Deliwe, Social Performance Manager at Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility. “By involving young Social Influencers from the community, this programme addresses immediate challenges while laying a foundation for long-term educational and personal growth.”

The programme equips students to confront bullying, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy. By offering practical and emotional support, it helps reduce dropout rates and promotes positive behaviour.

Each month, Social Influencers lead discussions tailored to student needs on topics such as sexual and reproductive health, menstruation, gender-based violence, and self-esteem. Practical support includes distributing sanitary towels to approximately 450 girls at each visit, bridging health and education.

Learners facing heightened risks are connected directly with social workers for more intensive assistance. In collaboration with LoveLife, Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility ensures these sessions foster discipline, resilience, and a commitment to long-term academic success.

Since inception, the programme has helped tackle social challenges identified by local schools. “We’ve seen firsthand how this initiative has contributed to a healthier, more resilient student body,” added Deliwe. “By confronting issues like substance abuse, bullying, and teenage pregnancy, we’re building a foundation of support for future generations.”

This youth-led programme will continue to be funded through 2025, extending ENGIE’s commitment to sustainable community development in the region. Working with LoveLife, the initiative provides a structured framework that empowers learners and strengthens community resilience across the four towns.

Programme at a glance:

  • Participating schools: 12 primary schools, including Adelaide Premier Skool, Lingelethu Full Service Primary School, and Richard Msuthu Primary School.

  • Reach: Approximately 1,000 learners.

  • Key topics: Sexual and reproductive health, menstruation, gender-based violence, substance abuse, bullying, and self-love.
