1.7 Million Strays, One Way to Help This Dog Day

International Dog Day is a celebration of the joy, loyalty, and unconditional love that dogs bring into our lives. But it’s also a reminder of the harsh reality faced by many dogs across South Africa. With more than 1.7 million stray dogs in the country and only 650,000 shelter spaces, countless dogs are still waiting for their forever homes.

Bringing Comfort While Dogs Wait for Homes

Hill’s Pet Nutrition recently took a creative approach to mark the day. The company upcycled its branded materials — including old banners, bandanas, shirts, and jackets — into colourful, durable toys called Hillies. These toys were hand-delivered to shelters across the country, giving dogs something to call their own while they wait for adoption.

The special deliveries were captured on film and in photographs, showing dogs eagerly choosing their new companions. Some leapt at the toys immediately, while others carefully sniffed and tested before finding “the one.” Each choice revealed the unique personality of the dogs, offering a touching glimpse into the lives behind the kennel doors.

“These moments are more than cute; they’re a reminder that every dog deserves to be seen and valued,” said Jackie Quail, Hill’s Shelter Channel Manager. “International Dog Day is about celebrating that bond and inspiring people to consider adoption. The right home, the right care, and the right nutrition can completely transform a dog’s life.”

Beyond Toys: Inspiring Adoption

While the Hillies provide much-needed stimulation and comfort, Hill’s stressed that they are a symbol of something deeper — the need for permanent, loving homes. To make that process easier, the company has introduced the Pet Matchmaker app, a platform that connects potential adopters with shelter dogs suited to their lifestyle.

“Adoption changes two lives, the dog’s and yours,” Quail added. “It’s the perfect step to meet the dog that’s been waiting for you.”

How You Can Help

Hill’s encourages South Africans to celebrate dogs by:

  • Downloading the Pet Matchmaker app to view and book appointments with adoptable pets.

  • Contacting local shelters to volunteer or offer support if adoption isn’t possible right now.

  • Sharing adoption stories on social media using #PetMatchmaker and tagging @hillspetfoodsa.

Shelters Taking Part

Dogs featured in the Hillies campaign — along with many others — are available for adoption at shelters nationwide, including:

  • Animal Anti-Cruelty League (Cape Town & Johannesburg)

  • Tears Animal Rescue (Cape Town)

  • Animal Welfare Society (Stellenbosch)

  • Woodrock Animal Rescue (Pretoria)
