On the 27th of June this year Grant “CrazyBikeGuy” Cameron-Smith completed an 8884km fundraising raising initiative from London to Istanbul on a mountain bike. This initiative was conducted to raise funds to autistic youth to obtain meaningful employment and become more self-sufficient.
The R200 000 raised was collected from a large number of generous donations and sponsors. This money will be used to build South Africa’s first Special Kneads Café and Skills Training Centre. The establishment will be opened early next year in Rivonia, Johannesburg.
Special Knead Café will collaborate with the Edu360 Academy to provide a programme that focuses on equipping the autistic youth to become independent and integrate into society more easily. The founder of the Special Knead Café, Kim Rudle, says, “Every cent [of the R200 000] will go towards helping young adults with autism develop skills that will enable them to find employment and build independent lives”.
Cameron-Smith started his 8800km journey on the 13th of March 2019. After his departure in London, he traveled through France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece, and arrived in Istanbul on the 27th of June 2019. In total, he cycled for 510 hours, over 73 days.
