Curro blankets the nation during cold winter snap

As South Africans brace themselves for another strong cold front this week, with possible snowfalls approaching, Curro preschools’ learners, parents and teachers have been bringing warmth and hope to communities nationwide through their remarkable Mandela Month initiative, ‘Hip to be Square.’

This heartwarming project involved preschool learners from the leading independent school group collecting colourful fabric squares that were then skilfully knitted and crocheted into 1,053 gorgeous blankets.

Each blanket, adorned with the Curro logo, was carefully packaged, and distributed to 39 children’s hospitals, community centres, and non-profit organisations across the country. The project aimed to make a meaningful impact on the lives of unwell children, providing them with comfort and warmth during the harsh winter.

Kirsten Davie from Curro Holdings, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Our ‘Hip to be Square’ initiative has been an extraordinary journey. It goes beyond the act of giving, embracing the legacy of Nelson Mandela and the spirit of ubuntu and celebrating the discovery of a practice or hobby that nurtures mindfulness and reflection. By bringing together communities in this meaningful project, we aim to encourage our learners to make a tangible difference in the lives of those around them whilst crafting a lasting impact for the local communities”.

The ‘Hip to be Square’ project has captivated the hearts of all those involved, fostering a sense of connectedness within Curro’s preschool communities. Participants from various walks of life, including learners, staff members, parents, and residents, dedicated their time and effort to creating these stunning tapestries. With 25,239 squares collected, these intricate stitches and vibrant colours symbolise unity and celebrate the diversity that makes South Africa thrive.

Notable recipients of the blanket drive include Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital, Tumelo Home for Handicapped Children, Witbank General Hospital Children’s Ward, Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Ward, Summer Hill House, and Baby in a Box.

As the cold front approaches, the warmth of compassion and the spirit of togetherness will shine on the ‘Hip to be Square’ initiative.
