Entrepreneur empowers women through pet fashion

The global rise in pet humanisation, where pets are treated as family rather than property, is driving rapid growth in the global pet accessories market, expected to reach USD 25.1 billion in 2025 and nearly USD 49.6 billion by 2034, according to Global Market Insights. In South Africa, this trend is being met with innovation that combines purpose and sustainability through a new local enterprise, Senya Pet Couture, founded by Cape Town entrepreneur Phryne Williams.

Williams launched Senya Pet Couture after adopting two rescue sighthounds and struggling to find accessories that were both stylish and functional. “When I couldn’t find what I wanted, I started making my own leads and collars,” she said. “People began asking where I got them, and before long, I was taking orders.”

The business has since evolved into a social enterprise that produces bespoke, hand-crafted dog leads and collars made from repurposed climbing and yachting rope. The approach supports waste reduction and provides an eco-conscious option for pet owners who want high-quality, sustainable accessories. Each product is repairable and includes a 12-month warranty on craftsmanship.

Senya’s use of repurposed rope reduces waste and ensures durability, while the materials’ strength and softness provide comfort and safety for pets. Each product can be customised with finishes such as tassels, beads, or colour combinations to reflect the personality of the pet.

More importantly, the business has become a source of income and skills development for women from disadvantaged communities in Cape Town. Williams personally trains women artisans to produce Senya’s products, creating jobs and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

“As a long-time participant and board member of Women for Afrika, empowering women has always been a passion of mine,” Williams said. “Senya Pet Couture allows me to combine that passion with animal welfare and environmental sustainability.”

Part of Senya Pet Couture’s proceeds go towards Sighthound Rescue South Africa, supporting rescue efforts for abused and abandoned sighthounds across the country. The brand’s “style with purpose” model ensures that every sale contributes to animal welfare while advancing women’s empowerment and environmental responsibility.

Senya Pet Couture products are available online at www.senyapetaccessories.co.za and will also be showcased at the following markets:
Kamers/Makers: 28 October – 2 November at Allee Bleue, Franschhoek
Best Thing Ever Christmas Fair: 21 – 23 November at Hellenic Community Centre, Cape Town
Simply Gifts Christmas Market: 8 – 23 December at San Souci School, Claremont

Through sustainable design, local job creation, and animal welfare advocacy, Senya Pet Couture is an example of how South African entrepreneurs are turning global lifestyle trends into social impact opportunities.
