Emerging Artists show the depths of human intelligence

The City of Cape Town’s Community Services and Health Directorate recently celebrated the creativity and innovation of 19 local artists at a vibrant art exhibition hosted at the SA Sendinggestig Museum on Long Street.

The exhibition, organised through the City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department, is part of an ongoing effort to unlock opportunities for emerging artists across Cape Town. Since its inception in 2019, the Emerging Artists Programme has supported hundreds of creatives to develop their skills, showcase their work, and generate income from their talent.

The latest showcase, themed “Human Intelligence in an Artificial World,” invited artists to explore how creativity and the human mind thrive in a world increasingly influenced by technology and data. Each piece told a visual story of imagination, resilience, and the power of human expression.

The 19 participating artists hailed from communities across the metro, including Gugulethu, Elsies River, Fish Hoek, and Somerset West. Before the exhibition, they attended an Exhibition Readiness Workshop to prepare them for professional display and public engagement.

Councillor Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, commended the initiative, saying:
“The youngest artist in this exhibition is only 16 years old, which shows our deep commitment to nurturing youth talent. Providing platforms for creative expression not only builds confidence but strengthens Cape Town’s reputation as South Africa’s art and music capital.”

The exhibition was the first of three planned before the end of the year, reflecting the City’s sustained investment in the arts as a driver of community development, youth empowerment, and cultural diversity.

Aspiring artists interested in participating in upcoming exhibitions can email emerging@capetown.gov.za for details.
