Mahindra Sales Surge as Local Assembly Expands

Mahindra has cemented its position as one of South Africa’s most successful automotive brands after recording its highest-ever annual sales in 2025, driven by expanded local manufacturing capacity and sustained investment in the country.

The company sold 18,097 vehicles during the calendar year, representing year-on-year growth of more than 40%. This performance significantly outpaced the broader vehicle market, which grew by approximately 15% as the industry recovered to pre-COVID levels.

A key contributor to this growth has been the opening of Mahindra’s new assembly facility in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The state-of-the-art facility enables the company to assemble more than 1,000 Pik Up models per month, increase local content and produce special edition vehicles such as the Pik Up Karoo range.

The Durban facility has strengthened Mahindra’s ability to supply the local market consistently while reducing dependence on imported fully built units. The locally assembled Pik Up single cab has become one of the three most popular workhorse vehicles in South Africa, widely used across agriculture, construction and small business sectors.

Mahindra’s performance in 2025 positioned it as the third best-performing volume brand in the country. The company has been the top-performing automotive brand in three of the past six years and has ranked among the fastest-growing brands by compound annual growth rate since 2017.

While commercial vehicles remain central to the brand, Mahindra also recorded strong growth in its passenger vehicle segment. Passenger vehicle sales more than doubled in 2025, rising from 3,969 units in 2024 to 8,085 units. This growth was driven by demand for the XUV 3XO and Scorpio-N models, both of which were recognised at South Africa’s Car of the Year awards.

In parallel with manufacturing expansion, Mahindra commissioned its largest national warehouse and distribution centre during the past year. The facility supports daily parts distribution to a network of more than 100 dealers nationwide, improving service availability and turnaround times.

Mahindra South Africa CEO Rajesh Gupta said the company’s performance reflects a long-term approach to operating in the country, centred on local investment, supply chain development and customer support.

As Mahindra enters its third decade in South Africa, the company says it will continue to focus on expanding local production, strengthening dealer and aftersales infrastructure and supporting sustainable growth in the automotive sector.
