City supports grassroots football

Every week in October thousands of children, teens and community players will lace up their boots across Cape Town thanks to City-supported grassroots football tournaments. From Athlone to Green Point, these events are far more than games: they’re safe spaces for young people to grow, dream and develop.

At the Rygate Football Association’s junior competition in Athlone, 257 teams from 98 clubs – including girls as young as six – will take part in six-a-side matches. With the City’s Recreation and Parks Department providing pitches and event support, youngsters can play on quality facilities that mirror the professional game.

The iconic Kapstadt Cup, now in its 14th year, has evolved from a local festival into an international showcase featuring 134 teams across nine age groups. Clubs from Namibia, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape will join local sides in 346 matches across four venues, giving Cape Town players exposure to new talent and styles.

Later in October, Athlone Stadium will stage the SAFA Cape Town Coke Cup Finals – the country’s biggest amateur football event – with six teams contesting titles in U18 Boys, Senior Ladies and Senior Men. Entry-level tournaments such as the Tygerberg LFA Knockout Finals and Clyde Pinelands FC’s Junior Fiesta Tournament round off a month packed with grassroots action.

Beyond these October fixtures, the City has already supported a host of community tournaments including the Bayhill Premier Cup, the Tournament of Dreams and the Greenwood Athletic Unity Cup. This ongoing investment ensures that local football remains a pipeline for talent and a force for social cohesion.

“Grassroots football is at the core of sporting development,” says Alderman JP Smith. “Our support for these tournaments is about more than producing future stars – it’s about building confident young people who will contribute to Cape Town’s growth in the years to come.”

By backing these competitions, the City is giving thousands of youngsters the chance to shine, to dream and to take their first steps on the path to the highest level of the sport – while strengthening the social fabric of communities right now.
