City celebrates 13 years with Bonsai

The 13th annual Bonsai Festival transformed the Company’s Garden into a vibrant celebration of creativity, culture, and horticultural artistry this past weekend. Under the theme “Bonsai and Art in the Park,” the event drew residents and visitors alike to appreciate the delicate balance between art and nature.

The festival was a collaborative effort between the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department, the Community, Arts and Culture Development (CACD) Department—which runs the ArtsAweh! and Emerging Artists Programme—and the Cape Regional Association of Bonsai (CRAB). Together, they curated an experience where community, creativity, and environmental appreciation seamlessly intertwined.

Visitors enjoyed a captivating showcase of bonsai trees, complemented by exhibitions from emerging local artists through the ArtsAweh! initiative. This open-air gallery invited attendees to experience art in an organic, natural setting, enriching the bonsai displays with new layers of interpretation and creativity.

‘The Bonsai Festival celebrates community, creativity and our love of art and nature, drawing residents and visitors into our parks and green spaces to connect with the environment and each other. It’s an ancient art and I hope we inspire a new generation of tree lovers and bonsai enthusiasts,’ said Councillor Francine Higham, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.

More than just a visual feast, the event fostered environmental awareness and strengthened community ties by encouraging Capetonians to engage with the city’s green spaces. Through the fusion of art and ecology, the festival highlighted the City’s ongoing commitment to nurturing creativity, supporting local talent, and promoting sustainability in urban spaces.
