Cape Town is playing host to a global environmental initiative as the Plastic Odyssey travelling exhibition arrives at the Dome in Green Point Park, in partnership with the City of Cape Town. The exhibition, which is open to the public until Friday, 19 December 2025, shines a spotlight on practical, locally driven solutions to plastic pollution.
Cape Town marks the 42nd stop on Plastic Odyssey’s four-year maritime expedition around the world. The vessel docked at the V&A Waterfront Marina on Tuesday, 9 December, and will depart on 22 December, bringing global innovation and collaboration to the city for two weeks.
Plastic Odyssey is a floating laboratory dedicated to identifying, testing and sharing low-cost, easily replicable plastic recycling solutions. Equipped with an onboard micro-recycling plant, the ship enables hands-on training, awareness campaigns and project incubation in collaboration with local partners. With a crew of around 20, the vessel also serves as a real-world experiment in zero-waste living and sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.
During their stay in Cape Town, the Plastic Odyssey team is working closely with local entrepreneurs, community organisations, children and youth. Entrepreneurs are spending time on board exchanging skills and experiences in innovative recycling, while young people are taking part in educational tours and hands-on activities focused on plastic alternatives. Community organisations are also engaging with the City to share insights on circular economy and recycling initiatives.
“Our mission is to collaborate with communities and entrepreneurs in transforming plastic waste into valuable resources and economic opportunities, while also promoting alternatives to single-use plastic products,” said Sarah Domergue from Plastic Odyssey.
As part of the visit, children’s homes were invited to tour the ship before attending the nomadic exhibition at the City’s newly constructed Dome venue in Green Point Park. The exhibition offers an interactive learning experience, showcasing plastic alternatives through themed “treasure chests” and sharing the story of the ship and its global journey. Visitors can also view the City’s Smart Living exhibition at the same venue.
The City of Cape Town has welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns strongly with its long-term waste reduction and environmental protection goals.
“The Plastic Odyssey crew is raising vital awareness about preventing and reducing plastic pollution, which supports the City’s drive to reduce waste, increase recycling and protect our environment,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg. “Through programmes such as Think Twice, City drop-off facilities, organic food waste projects and Swop Shops, we are making it easier for communities to play their part.”
The Plastic Odyssey exhibition is open daily from 10:00 to 16:00 at the Dome in Green Point Park until Friday, 19 December 2025, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore solutions that protect the environment and oceans for future generations.
