Africa Launches First AI×Bio Factory

A new AI-powered biomedical facility in South Africa aims to generate more than one million African clinico-genomic insights, strengthening the continent’s role in global healthcare innovation.

Africa has taken a significant step towards shaping the future of medicine with the launch of the continent’s first AI×Bio Factory in South Africa. The initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration between IndyGeneUS Bio, The Aurum Institute and Global Health Innovations (GHI), powered by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

The AI×Bio Factory is designed to support the generation of more than one million African clinico-genomic insights over time, creating a foundation for AI-driven drug discovery, precision medicine, biomarker development, advanced diagnostics and next-generation healthcare innovation.

Located within a former pharmaceutical facility in Johannesburg, the project repurposes existing laboratory and operational infrastructure into an AI-enabled health intelligence platform. The initiative reflects a growing global shift towards integrating biology, data and artificial intelligence to accelerate medical discovery and improve health outcomes.

At the heart of the facility is IndyGeneUS Bio’s proprietary Clinico-Genomic Insight Engine (CGIE™), which combines genomic, clinical, pathology, imaging and real-world evidence data to generate actionable healthcare insights. The platform is intended to support pharmaceutical companies, healthcare systems, researchers and governments seeking access to advanced biomedical intelligence capabilities.

The initiative brings together research institutions, healthcare implementation organisations, cloud technology providers and government stakeholders to create one of Africa’s most ambitious health intelligence ecosystems. Built on The Aurum Institute’s extensive healthcare and research experience, the platform seeks to strengthen Africa’s contribution to global biomedical innovation while ensuring research translates into meaningful benefits for local communities.

The launch follows a recent Memorandum of Understanding between IndyGeneUS Bio and Nigeria’s National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency, which aims to support future collaboration in genomics, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and sovereign health data infrastructure. While South Africa serves as the operational hub, the long-term vision extends across the continent through strategic partnerships.

Yusuf Henriques, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of IndyGeneUS Bio, said the project is about expanding participation in the future of healthcare innovation.

“For too long, large segments of the global population have remained underrepresented in the datasets shaping healthcare innovation. Through advanced AI capabilities, scientific expertise and African clinico-genomic insights, we are building infrastructure designed to accelerate discovery and expand precision medicine opportunities,” he said.

The Aurum Institute Chief Executive Officer Vinodh Edward said Africa has a unique opportunity to play a defining role in the future of healthcare innovation by combining clinical research excellence, healthcare implementation expertise and AI-enabled discovery systems.

As healthcare systems, governments and pharmaceutical companies increasingly invest in AI-driven medicine, access to diverse and high-quality health data is becoming one of the most valuable assets in modern healthcare. The AI×Bio Factory positions Africa not only as a participant in global healthcare innovation, but as an active contributor helping to shape its future.
