A sports development initiative funded by De Wildt Solar, and implemented in partnership with the South African Football Coaches Association (SAFCA) and Nda Tirha Media House, is transforming the lives of young athletes and coaches across the Madibeng local area. Since its launch in 2023, the programme has benefitted more than 500 young people, creating pathways into professional sport and strengthening local talent.
One of the standout achievements has been the promotion of Mawete FC and Mighty FC to the SAFA Madibeng Hollywood Bets Regional League for the 2025/26 season. The programme has also invested heavily in coach development, with 13 netball coaches completing the NSL Level 1 Coaching Course and 15 football coaches obtaining their SAFA Coaching C License this year.
Local coaches have praised the initiative for its impact. Sibongile Siquaque, coach of the Glitter Girls, explained:
“This sports development programme has given me the chance to connect with other coaches through Netball South Africa, which has been an incredible learning experience. Our players have improved by competing against professional players, and we are excited about the upcoming coaching course later this year. Netball has grown so much, and as a coach, I believe it’s my responsibility to teach my players the importance of professionalism and the opportunities it can bring.”
The programme is also creating employment prospects, with one coach securing work in professional sport. Community teams have received vital support, including soccer jerseys donated by Bakgatla Ba Mmakau King Sakie Motsepe and Eland Platinum Mine, while Sefako Makgatho University has hosted advanced coaching courses.
Qinisani Siveshe, Social Performance Manager for De Wildt Solar, highlighted the broader vision behind the investment:
“By investing in our youth, we are investing in the future of our communities. We’ve seen how sport can give youth a sense of belonging, discipline, and hope, while also opening doors to professional opportunities. By supporting coaches with formal qualifications and helping community teams reach higher leagues, we are not only strengthening community pride but also creating role models who will inspire the next generation.”
Looking ahead, the programme aims to expand its impact by formalising team operations, accrediting more coaches, and creating additional opportunities for young players to grow both on and off the field.
