Mattel’s new doll range promotes gender inclusivity

On Wednesday 25 September, Mattel officially launched a line of “gender-inclusive” dolls called Creatable World. Six dolls, ranging in skin colour make up the line, and each doll is accompanied by a range of shoe and clothing options, as well as the option for short or long hair.

In a statement, Kim Culmone, the senior vice-principal of Mattel Fashion Doll Design said, “Toys are a reflection of culture and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels”.

Mattel has been active in ensuring that their products are diverse and inclusive. Barbie, for example, has evolved from a white, blonde, petite doll, to now be inclusive of various races, builds, and dress styles. The Creatable World line allows children to play with dolls that are not prescribed by gender.
