South African surfer makes rubbish chic

Mike Schlebach is a South African surfer who seeks to clean the waters he surfs in. He has partnered with Jasper Eales, a designer, Schlebach changes rubbish and used materials such as display banners and PVC truck caps into laptop covers and fashionable bags.

He says, “If the materials weren’t upcycled, they would probably land up in landfills” and adds that converting rubbish into fashion is, “Probably as environmentally sustainable as you can get”.

Schlebach’s team at Sealand Gear create a wide variety of items, no two of which are ever the same, but are equally functional and durable. Every item created is labeled with the creator’s name
