City’s first vehicle licensing renewal ‘drive-through’ now open

Cape Town motorists can now skip the queues and renew their vehicle licence discs without ever leaving their cars. In a first for the city, the City of Cape Town has officially opened a dedicated drive-through motor vehicle licensing facility in Brackenfell.

Located on the corner of Reservoir and Kruispad Roads, the centre allows residents to complete the entire process — from payment to receiving their new disc — in as little as five minutes, provided all paperwork is in order.

Open from Monday to Friday (11:30–19:30) and Saturdays (11:00–14:30), the drive-through is currently dedicated to motor vehicle licence renewals only. To ensure smoother service, the facility is fully cashless, accepting debit and credit card payments. Motorists who have received a renewal notice via SMS simply need to show it at the window.

“This is about making life easier for our residents,” said Councillor Siseko Mbandezi, Mayoral Committee Member for Finance. “Our initial tests indicate that a renewal process at the drive-through could take less than five minutes. You simply drive up, pay, and drive away with your new disc.”

The City is in talks with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to further extend weekday operating hours. It has also committed to exploring additional sites for more drive-through licensing facilities across Cape Town in the months ahead.

This innovation builds on the success of the City’s Online Booking System, which has already streamlined access to services such as vehicle licensing and registrations, municipal account payments, and general enquiries. The booking service is currently available at select branches, with expansion plans underway.

With initiatives like these, the City continues to position itself as South Africa’s most convenient and trusted motor vehicle licensing agent.
