The City of Cape Town has allocated R850,000 to fund the latest round of its ongoing mass animal sterilisation campaign, targeting areas within Subcouncils 4 and 6, including Ravensmead, Elsies River, and Bellville South.
The campaign, run in partnership with the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF), has been active since 2013. Over the past 12 years, the project has sterilised 17,876 animals at a total cost of nearly R8 million. This year, six registered animal welfare organisations will sterilise 1,500 domestic pets between August and December.
The initiative aims to prevent unwanted litters, reduce animal cruelty and neglect, improve animal health, and promote responsible pet ownership through education.
City Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, welcomed the continuation of the project and praised the contribution of welfare partners.
“This campaign has had a real impact in communities across Cape Town, and we’re proud to support it again this year,” said Higham.
CAWF Chairperson Karen de Klerk thanked the City for its ongoing commitment, noting the campaign’s role in easing the burden on welfare organisations and improving community well-being.
Participating organisations include the Animal Rescue Organisation, Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Animal Welfare Society of South Africa, Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Envirovet, and Vetsol.
