Pick n Pay offers support to Masiphumelele community after fire

Pick n Pay has pledged its support for the Masiphumelele community after a devastating fire destroyed many homes. It has been reported that about 1,000 dwellings have been affected by the fire on Thursday, leaving many families destitute.

Pick n Pay has donated food and other essential products to the value of R40,000 to Living Hope. Food, water, lip ice, energy bars and drinks were being provided to fire fighters for their brave efforts to bring the blaze under control and prevent further damage. 500 loaves of bread and peanut butter were provided by Pick n Pay early on Friday morning, and staff and volunteers spent the morning preparing sandwiches for the Masiphumelele community. On Friday afternoon, food cooked at stores was also being provided for the people that have lost their homes.

Donation trolleys have been set up in selected Pick n Pay stores, and Capetonians wanting to support the community can donate essential items here. All supplies will be delivered to Living Hope to be distributed amongst the community.

Participating Pick n Pay stores include Camps Bay, Gardens, Longbeach, Hout Bay, Sea Point, and Waterfront. Essential items needed include blankets, baby food or formula, nappies, and non-perishable food.

“Hundreds of families have lost everything and need our support. We immediately mobilized our staff, and opened our stores as collection points for anyone wanting to donate essential items. We will continue to offer our support to the Masiphumelele community during this critical time when so many face terrible loss,” says Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, transformation director at Pick n Pay.
