300 Paws Set For Promenade

Dog lovers are invited to step out for a cause at the eighth annual Paws on the Promenade, a fundraising walk hosted by Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter in partnership with Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition.

Taking place on Sunday, 12 April at 9am, the five-kilometre walk starts at the Mouille Point Lighthouse and stretches along the scenic Sea Point Promenade to the Sea Point Swimming Pool and back. Shorter turnaround points will also be available for older or injured pets — and humans.

Organisers hope to build on the success of last year’s event, which attracted 295 dogs and raised R37 500 on a modest budget of R8 500.

Funds raised will support the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter, an NPO veterinary clinic in Khayelitsha that assists around 22 000 animals every year through consultations, surgeries, sterilisations, mobile clinics, an animal ambulance and a shelter for homeless pets. The organisation also focuses on community education to encourage responsible pet ownership.

The need for support is particularly urgent following news that a key international funder will not renew grants in South Africa, resulting in a funding shortfall of R250 000 per month.

Participants can expect a colourful and creative atmosphere, with many owners dressing up alongside their pets. Past events have featured Dalmatians in tutus, Dachshunds in hot dog costumes and Pomeranians in bow ties.

Tickets cost R50 per person, R50 per dog and R25 for children under 12. Tickets are available via Quicket or on the day from 08:30.

Visitors can also enjoy raffle prizes, food, coffee, craft stalls and pet products. The first 100 dogs to arrive will receive a free goodie bag.

Humans without dogs are welcome, and a limited number of shelter dogs will be available to “rent” for the walk, giving participants the chance to help socialise animals in need of homes.
