International Dog Day on 26 August is highlighting the bond between people and dogs while encouraging South Africans to support adoption, responsible ownership and animal welfare.
From loyal family companions and therapy animals to guide dogs and rescue animals, dogs play an important role in households and communities across the country.
FOUR PAWS South Africa is using this year’s International Dog Day to celebrate those relationships while drawing attention to dogs that continue to experience abandonment, neglect and life on the streets.
Dogs provide companionship and emotional support, while specially trained animals can also assist people in navigating everyday life. Their relationship with people has made them an important part of families and communities.
FOUR PAWS is encouraging dog owners to use the occasion to spend additional time with their animals through activities that support both physical and emotional wellbeing.
These can include visiting dog-friendly outdoor spaces, participating in community walks, engaging in positive play and training, or simply spending additional time together.
“Dogs enrich our lives in countless ways. They provide companionship, comfort and unconditional loyalty. International Dog Day is an opportunity to recognise everything they bring to our families while also remembering the many dogs still waiting for loving homes,” said Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa.
The organisation is also encouraging people considering bringing a dog into their family to explore adoption through reputable animal shelters and welfare organisations.
Adoption provides dogs with another opportunity to find permanent homes while helping shelters manage the number of animals requiring care.
Responsible ownership remains equally important once an animal has been adopted, with owners taking on a long-term commitment to provide appropriate care, protection and companionship.
FOUR PAWS supports responsible pet ownership alongside initiatives intended to improve animal welfare and strengthen relationships between animals and the communities in which they live.
“Every dog deserves the opportunity to live a life free from suffering and filled with care, protection and companionship. By choosing adoption, supporting local shelters and being a responsible pet owner, every South African can play a role in creating a kinder world for animals,” Miles said.
International Dog Day provides an opportunity to celebrate dogs already living in loving homes while also directing attention towards animals still awaiting adoption.
Through adoption, responsible pet ownership and support for animal welfare organisations, South Africans can use the annual celebration to help create safer and more caring environments for dogs across the country.
