‘Tournament of Dreams’ scores big

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department collaborated with tournament organisers for the third instalment of the event this past weekend, at the Rocklands Sports Complex in Mitchells Plain.

The soccer tournament brought together senior teams from various clubs across the city.

What made this year’s event even more successful was the introduction of 16 ladies teams – testament to the rapid growth and interest in women’s football.

The support of the Recreation and Parks Department to the “Tournament of Dreams” has been a cornerstone of the event’s success.

Now in its third year, the event has become a highlight on the local football calendar underscoring its significance in promoting sportsmanship, community participation and the development of football talent.

The following teams walked away with top honours

Men’s category

·       Team winners – Liverpool Portlands (LFA Mitchells Plain)

·       Team of the Tournament – Riverton (LFA Mitchells Plain)

Ladies category

·       Team winners – Dangerous Heroes (Greater Phillipi LFA)

·       Team of the Tournament – Salt River Blackpool (Cape District FA)

Proceeds from the tournament will contribute to the ongoing development of young players in the under-six, under-eight and under-10 age groups. Additionally, the funds will support the coaching and development of young match officials, ensuring a sustainable pool of talent in football officiating.

‘We are delighted to have seen such interest and participation in the competition and we would like to thank and congratulate all the participants, officials and members of the community who made this event a success. It not only celebrated the beautiful game but also created opportunities to reinforce the bonds within our communities, echoing the spirit of inclusivity and sportsmanship,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
