Aware of the financial burden of private healthcare in South Africa, Veronica Mogashoa, Mabu Sekhaolelo and Paulinah Mafatshe came together to set up an after-hours private clinic in Mamelodi for the working class, most of whom work until 16:00pm on a daily basis.
According to Mafatshe, “We were all about to retire but still had a passion to help the sick”. They have known each other for years and have years of experience in the nursing profession hence they saw a gap in the industry and decided to cater to individuals who knock after 16:00pm. Sekhaolelo added that they also opened the clinic because they wanted to create jobs especially since they were planning to expand.
The trio struggled to find a location for the clinic, so Mafatshe decided to speak to her husband who agreed to transform their family home into the after-hours clinic. They turned two rooms into consulting facilities and the other two rooms into the reception and waiting area. “We have very supportive families. We started buying one item at a time until we had enough equipment to open the clinic”.
The Wellness Today operates from 16:00 pm to 19:00 pm and their prices range from R30 to R150. The clinic offers services like child immunization, family planning, HIV tests and counselling, influenza injections, minor wound care, TB screening, malaria screening and pregnancy tests.
