Continental Tyre South Africa is Committed to Sustainability and Environmental Protection

As the only Continental tyre manufacturing plant on the African continent, the German tyre manufacturer delivers products of the highest quality, supplying original equipment (OE) tyres to most of the major vehicle manufacturers and exporters in South Africa, producing a wide range of passenger and light commercial vehicle tyres for the replacement segment in the country, and exporting tyres to numerous markets around the world.

Continental Tyre SA first achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification in August 2015, and has maintained this status ever since for its comprehensive environmental management policies and systems. This includes an extensive range of practices that reduce energy and water consumption, minimise waste and bolster its recycling initiatives. All of this forms part of Continental’s drive towards climate-neutral production across its global manufacturing network by 2040.

The company first obtained ISO 45001 certification in 2019, and previously maintained an OHSAS 18001 since 2015, for its occupational health and safety management systems, and continues to maintain this standard in line with the latest ISO 45001:2018 certification.

Continental is committed to delivering a range of products and services of the highest quality while minimising the impact its operations have on the environment, and ensuring that its employees benefit from a healthy and safe workplace. There is no compromise when it comes to quality, sustainability and the well-being of its employees. The renewal of the ISO certifications for the plant in Gqeberha are testament to this.

The ISO certification requires extensive ongoing work and dedication from the Continental team, and embodies the company’s focus on continuous improvement and excellence in all aspects of its manufacturing operations.

The ambition of Continental Tires by 2030 is to reduce its energy consumption globally by 20 percent versus 2018. Continental is aiming to achieve climate-neutral production by 2040 at the latest.

The tyre plant in South Africa

Continental Tyre South Africa has a long and proud legacy in South Africa spanning 77 years, and currently employs over 1 100 people across its manufacturing, marketing and sales operations. Its local operations were established in 1947 as the General Tire and Rubber Company. In 1985, Continental AG and General Tire South Africa signed an agreement to produce Continental-branded tyres in South Africa. The local operation was acquired by Continental in 1998 and renamed Continental Tyre South Africa (Pty) Ltd, creating the foundation to become one of South Africa’s leading tyre manufacturers and an integral part of Continental’s global family. In 2013, Continental Tyre SA became a fully owned subsidiary of Continental AG.
