Mustadafin Foundation Honours Elders

The Mustadafin Foundation marked Heritage Month by celebrating elders as the custodians of wisdom, culture, and resilience. The organisation hosted 150 seniors from Khayelitsha, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Delft, Tafelsig, and Bridgetown at its head office in Bridgetown for a day dedicated to honouring their contribution to society.

The event blended festivity with purpose. Seniors were treated to a braai, while the Broadway Cultural Group and Innie Kaap Cultural Group provided live performances that highlighted Cape heritage and created an atmosphere of joy and unity.

“Heritage lives in our elders,” said Ghairunisa Johnstone-Cassiem, director of Mustadafin Foundation. “They are the gems of our communities, carriers of wisdom, strength and resilience. Honouring them is not only about looking back, it is also about learning how to build a stronger, more compassionate future.”

The gathering formed part of Mustadafin’s broader mission to support vulnerable communities, with a particular focus on seniors whose roles as storytellers and culture bearers are often overlooked in modern society.

The Foundation extended its gratitude to partners and donors including Birkett Sheep, Broadway Cultural Band, Creative Kids Educare, Gatti’s Ice Cream, Innie Kaap, Springbok Deli and Woolworths South Africa. Their support made the celebration possible and ensured that the seniors were recognised with dignity and joy.
