UKZN Jazz Jol Celebrates 35 Years

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) is set to host the 35th edition of its iconic UKZN Jazz Jol on Saturday, 1 November 2025, at 18:00. This milestone event continues its long-standing tradition of showcasing some of South Africa’s finest jazz talent while raising funds for the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship, which supports deserving jazz students at the university. Proceeds will also go toward CJPM’s jazz education and community outreach programmes.

Headlining this year’s event is the dynamic 17-piece Big Band, Horn Horizon, led by celebrated trumpeter, vocalist, composer, and arranger Siyanda Zulu. The ensemble features some of Durban’s most accomplished jazz, pop, and gospel musicians, many of whom contribute original arrangements to the group’s vibrant repertoire. Following their acclaimed debut at The Chairman earlier this year, Horn Horizon has become a rising force in the South African jazz scene, captivating audiences with their bold sound and musical chemistry.

Adding to the night’s musical brilliance, the UKZN Large Ensemble — a talented collective of student vocalists and instrumentalists — will perform under the direction of renowned jazz maestro Linda Sikhakane. The ensemble promises an exciting performance that reflects their creativity, technical growth, and shared love of jazz.

The concert will also spotlight two standout final-year jazz recitalists, BuyieGold and Thembalethu Bhengu. Their performances will pay tribute to two South African jazz legends, Gloria Bosman and Sibongile Khumalo, as they reinterpret selections from the divas’ rich musical catalogues.
