A three-year-old boy recovering from severe burns has received more than R285,000 in public donations after hundreds of people rallied behind his family in six days.
Peyton Wahl remains in hospital after suffering serious burns when he accidentally fell into a bath containing hot water.
The Peyton Wahl Fund was established to help his family manage the mounting costs associated with his treatment and recovery.
According to the fundraising campaign, 254 donors contributed R285,156 in the first six days, including R2,200 received through offline donations.
The response represents 41% of the campaign’s revised R698,030 fundraising target.
Peyton is receiving treatment at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. His family has reported that he has since developed an infection and fever, adding another complication to his recovery.
When the fundraiser was initially established, the family expected medical expenses of approximately R200,000. As the extent of Peyton’s injuries and treatment requirements became clearer, the estimated cost increased substantially.
“With medical bills that initially started at around R200,000, we have now received an estimated cost of R698,029.30,” campaign organiser Juliette du Toit said.
The fundraising target was subsequently increased to help the family meet the growing costs associated with his care.
Peyton’s family has also raised concerns about access to the pain medication he requires, saying the hospital has experienced a shortage.
With his treatment continuing, the family says it remains uncertain what the eventual cost of his recovery will be.
The rapid fundraising response has, however, provided significant financial support at a time when the family is dealing with both Peyton’s condition and the uncertainty surrounding his recovery.
Some donations have come from people who know the family, while others have been made by members of the public who encountered Peyton’s story online.
“This is an incredibly difficult and emotional time for Peyton and his family,” the campaign says.
“We are humbly asking for your help to ease the financial burden and, most importantly, to help get Peyton the specialised care he desperately needs.”
Approximately R413,000 still needs to be raised to reach the current target.
Those unable to contribute financially have been encouraged to share the fundraising campaign and support the family as Peyton continues his recovery.
